Course Information & Syllabus
Class Title: Tech Savvy for Senior Citizens
Class Description: This class aims to introduce senior citizens to the world of technology. From understanding basic functions of smartphones, tablets, and computers, to mastering essential online tools and applications, this course will empower seniors to engage with the digital world with confidence and ease.
Duration: 12 weeks ( session per week, 1.5 hours each)
Cohort 7: Thursdays - July 16, 2026 - September 17, 2026 from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm via Zoom! Sign up today to receive the class Meeting ID.
Prerequisites: None – this class is designed for beginners
Week 1
Understanding Devices and Their Functions
o Overview of different devices: Smartphone, Tablets, Laptops, and Desktops
o Basic components of devices (screen, keyboard, touchpad, buttons)
o How to turn on/off and navigate the home screen
o Introduction to touch gestures (swiping, pinching, tapping)
Week 2
Introduction to the Internet and Browsing
o What is the internet and how does it work?
o Using a web browser (Google Chrome, Safari)
o Search engines (Google, Bing) and how to search for information
o Navigating websites and understanding URLs
o Setting up and using an email
Week 3
Online Privacy and Security
o Understanding passwords and keeping them secure
o Recognizing phishing emails and scams
o Setting privacy settings on social media and devices
o Safe online shopping and transactions
o Protecting personal information online
Video Calls and Virtual Meetings
o Introduction to video calling apps (Zoom, Skype, Facetime)
o Setting up and joining a video call
o Using a microphone and camera settings
o Sending text messages (SMS) and using messaging apps (WhatsApp, Messenger)
o Sending photos, videos, and voice messages
Week 4
Practical Application and Troubleshooting
Common Device Issues and Troubleshooting
o How to solve basic device problems (apps not working, slow device, etc.)
o Using online help and resources (forums, troubleshooting guides)
o Restarting devices, clearing cache, and resetting settings
Final Project and Review
o Hands-on session: Participating perform tasks learned throughout the course
(emailing, video calling, social media, etc.)
o Q&A and troubleshooting session
o Additional resources for continuing learning
